Meta launches a standalone AI application, entering competition with ChatGPT

Zuckerberg states that the app is “created to serve as your personal AI” and will mainly be used through voice interactions.

SAN FRANCISCO: On Tuesday, social media giant Meta launched its inaugural standalone AI assistant app, aiming to rival ChatGPT by providing users with direct access to its generative artificial intelligence models.

“In our apps, a billion people are already using Meta AI, so we’ve developed a new standalone Meta AI app for you to explore,” said Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg in a video shared on Instagram.

Zuckerberg stated that the app “is intended to function as your personal AI,” emphasizing that it will primarily be used through voice interactions tailored to each individual user.

“We’re beginning with a simple approach, gathering just a bit of context about your interests,” the CEO noted.

Over time, you’ll have the opportunity to share extensive information about yourself and those close to you with Meta AI across our various apps, if you wish.”

In line with the company’s social media roots, this app features a social feed that enables users to view AI-generated posts from others.

Additionally, the new application takes over from Meta View as the companion app for Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, facilitating seamless communication between the glasses, the mobile app, and desktop interfaces, according to the company.

This launch comes as OpenAI continues to lead in user-focused AI with its frequently updated ChatGPT assistant, which introduces new features regularly.
